Questions we often get about product design and development.

What’s product design and development?

Product design and development refers to the entire process of bringing a product from the initial design concept all the way to a tangible end product. Product design centers around bringing a vision to life, in terms of form, function and aesthetics–all with the ideal end user in mind.

Product design is informed by upfront trend analysis and an in-depth understanding of market viability. These factors influence the product design process, which includes building out the product’s aesthetics with elements such as colors, prints, patterns and textures, often in keeping with a brand’s style guide.

Bringing product designs to life involves product sketches, CAD drawings, 3-D renderings and the creation of physical prototypes. Product development encompasses everything from sourcing and manufacturing to managing suppliers and sample reviews to final quality assurance.

Product design and development success is directly correlated to the quality of your product strategy. At Earthbound, our approach begins with creating a blueprint that will guide every decision along the way.

What’s the difference between product design and development?

Product design is the process of creating the visual aspects of a product, including what it will look and feel like, as well as considering how it will interact with trends and seasonal nuances. Product development is the process of bringing design concepts to life and then to market.

The main difference between product design and product development is that product design is primarily focused on aesthetics that will both appeal to consumers and make it viable in the market, while product development spans every remaining step along the journey toward producing the product.

Product development work involves working with suppliers and manufacturers, sourcing materials, reviewing samples and quality assurance.

As a product design and development agency, Earthbound seamlessly works with brands and retailers from initial concept all the way to market-ready product. In some cases, we provide external guidance to clients with in-house product design or product development capabilities.

What is retail product development?

Retail product development is the process of creating, designing and launching products specifically for sale through retailers and retail channels. It’s informed by factors that influence consumer demand, including consumer preferences, shopping behaviors, retail trends and market dynamics.

There are many approaches to retail product development, including those where the retailer is involved in developing products for its own stores, or a brand or manufacturer develops products and sells them to retailers. Sometimes retail product development includes a brand licensing arrangement.

The retail product development process also emphasizes packaging and “shelf-appeal” to ensure the product sells well.

Retail product development often happens in partnership with a product design and development agency.
